Oil Thief
Oil Thief
The Oil Thief (OT, or OTIV for the Internal Valve unit), is a simple device that is utilized to collect accurate crude oil samples. Their lengths can be customized to suit your sampling needs. Sample cocks, also known as drain valves, can also be installed to test the different levels of your sample.
What is an Oil Thief?
An oil thief, also known as an oil sampler, petroleum sampler, or slurry sampler, is a manual oil quality sampling device for eyeballing the color, texture, and initial quality of raw oil on-site.
Oil Thief, Oil Sampler, Slurry Sampler, or Petroleum Sampling Device?
All of these terms refer to an oil thief device that takes samples of crude oil that is stored and ready to ship to the refinery. An oil thief (aka oil sampler or slurry sampler) is part of the standard equipment found in a kit on every oil truck carrying crude oil. Before the crude is shipped it must undergo testing, using the oil sampling equipment kept in the truck kit to affirm the value of the crude being hauled.

INSTRUCTIONS
- Snap Closure
- With the valve closed, make sure the trip rod is pushed fully into its sleeve, then lock the trip rod in this position by tightening the thumbscrew in the clutch top.
- Slide Valve Thief: Open the valve by pulling it outward until the clutch pin holds it open.
Internal Valve Thief: Open the valve by pushing the lever down until the cock pin holds it open. - Put the bail assembly hook into the slot at the top of the trip rod sleeve.
- Slowly lower the oil thief to the desired level in the tank.
- Give the lowering line an abrupt upward jerk. This should trip the valve closed, making the sample ready for retrieval from the tank.
- Tank Bottom Bump Closure
- Set the trip rod so its bottom end is at least 1/4 inch below bottom of oil thief, or extended to the desired sample height from bottom of tank.
- Slide Valve Thief: Lock the trip rod securely in set position by tightening the thumbscrew in the clutch top.
Internal Valve Thief: Lock the trip rod securely in set position by tightening the thumbscrew in the valve cock. - Open the valve.
- Lower the oil thief in a continuous motion until it bumps the tank bottom and trips the valve closed. Sample is now ready for retrieval.

MAINTENANCE & ADDITIONAL INFO
*All repairs must be sent back to factory for warranty to remain effective. If it has too much water or other unwanted substances, the sample taken from the oil thief or oil sampler may be rejected before it is hauled. The name slurry sampler is derived from the literal description of the liquid and sludge “slurry” taken from the testing device. Low quality samples taken from the thief or slurry sampler could also reduce the potential price per barrel. That is why an oil thief plays such an important part in the oil and gas exploration and production fields.
How are Protek Oil Thiefs Used?
The Protek Oil Thief is simply used to get a sample or samples by lowering it down on a chain or rope into the tank to whatever depth the tester wants to test. The thief has an opening at the bottom so the oil can be collected at the specific depth the tester wants. Once the desired depth has been reached to retrieve an oil sample, the tester gives a jerk on the chain or rope holding the thief causing it to close so the sample can be brought up to the surface for testing.
The company who owns the truck may want to take an oil sample just a few inches off the bottom of the tank, or sometimes may gather samples at different levels from the bottom. In order to do that, the person buying the thief will ask the manufacturer to place one or more sample cocks on the oil thief barrel. Then one can open the sample cock at certain levels after it is taken out to see the different layers of the crude on the bottom when tested and its value.
